A deafening shout of “Surprise!” and a fanfare from our school brass band greeted our headteacher David Lewin when he arrived at school on Wednesday. Pupils and staff from the school and nursery gathered for an unforgettable afternoon celebrating his 20 years as headteacher.

After singing a rousing “Happy 20 years to you” and a performance by the brass band, children from each year group hosted a series of Oscars-style presentations – with Mr Lewin accepting gifts including “The Cape of Kindness” and “The Medal of Marvellous Magnificence”. By the end, he was transformed: dressed up in all kinds of extraordinary clothing and accessories, before running through the crowd, high-fiving all 420 children gathered, his cape flying behind him!
More followed the awards ceremony, including the presentation of a scrapbook of messages and photos compiled by pupils, parents and staff- past and present, a beautiful piece of art with a portrait of Mr Lewin from each class in the school, and a trophy. Then, while the school brass band played, everyone enjoyed cakes and drinks in the sunshine, giving Mr Lewin a chance to chat with everybody from the the youngest in the Slade nursery to Year 6.

The event was enjoyed by everyone. Summer, a pupil in year 6, described the event: 'Mr Lewin was given presents like 'the cape of kindness' and 'the football of great headteacher skills' and then he ran around the playground giving all the students hi-fives! It was so fun and exciting!'

Kivein, in year 2 added: 'I thought the party was great! When Mr Lewin was about to come in, we had to wait very quietly, then we all shouted 'surprise!' - it was brilliant!
